The Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle

On Friday I thought I’d focus on the final race of the meeting…

Defi Bleu – EW

Style De Garde – EW

There’s a simple reason I have gone for these three… they are all bullet proof against my own unique trends profile for the race and having found the 1-2 last year and the winner the year before, I’ll keep everything crossed for the hat-trick! The last two winners have been trained by Gordon Elliot and it’s a race he likes to target, given the time he spent at Martin Pipes in his formative years.

Defi Bleu –

He goes for Elliot here and is one of the bigger priced ones. He makes handicap debut and ‘could be anything’. He arrives fit and in form. He was simply outclassed LTO so that run can be ignores. The runs behind that were decent enough in graded races. His maiden hurdle form suggests he wants a strong pace to aim at which could bring out even more. There’s a question about the ground but it could be getting better all the time and he’s a double figure price.

Style De Garde –

This is a big priced poke but he hits my trends and he just 6 starts ago, at last year’s Festival, he finished 2nd in the Fred Winter. So, we know he handles conditions and that he thrives in a big field. This one hasn’t had those conditions since and given he can be keen, he could be seen to much better affect here. He’s had a strange prep given he’s been mixing chasing and hurdling but he arrives in form. If he runs his race, and settles of a strong pace, he will out-run his big odds and give his trainer a second winner in this race in the last decade.

I will mention Dallas Des Pictons as he has a bombproof profile for this also but he is 7/2, 4/1. If you can get 5/1 each way that could be the play, but for a race like this he is a bit short for me.
